LG Display and QD team up on quatum-dot LEDs

LG Display and QD Vision on Tuesday said they will join forces to develop active-matrix displays that use quantum dot LED (QLED) nanotechnology. This kind of display is capable of brighter, more vibrant colors than existing screens while requiring less energy. QD Vision will provide its quantum dots, while LG will manufacture the actual products.

Quantum LED display should also reduce the costs of manufacturing techniques due to a simplified process. The dots are said to be as stable and reliable as inorganic semiconductor materials, like those used in LCDs, but can be processed in a solution.

QD says the technology has the potential to be twice as power efficient as OLEDs of the same color purity, and will have a light emitting efficiency improvement of between 30 and 40 percent over OLEDs at the same time.
