BlackBerry unusually overtakes iOS in US web share

BlackBerry used more on US web than iPhone

The BlackBerry saw a rare recent victory today after StatCounter showed the platform overtaking the iPhone in web use in the US. After steadily narrowing the gap over the past year, RIM just slightly overtook Apple in traffic, accounting for 34.3 percent of American traffic where iOS slipped to 33 percent. Despite its growth image, Android as a web platform has leveled off at 23.8 percent.

Worldwide figures also show RIM on the increase, at 19.25 percent, but it still trailed iOS' 21.9 percent and was well behind Symbian's 31.9 percent. Regardless, the trends if they continued could see Android and BlackBerry devices with twice the web share of iOS sometime next year, StatCounter's chief executive Aodhan Cullen claimed.

StatCounter's figures contradict actual user polls and analyst market share results. Nielsen just today put the iPhone ahead of the BlackBerry as of October, while earlier studies gave Android the lead. The results may suggest that Blackberry users have simply been turning more to the web, especially now that devices like the Torch and Style are using BlackBerry 6 and have modern web browsers.

    bull shat

BlackBerry don't have a usable browser, and the new version are not on majority of old devices.

yeah I'd have to agree. I find this report not very credible. It doesn't add up. The only way I can explain is to assume that iPhone owners are turning more to apps than the browser. But even then I find it difficult to believe that there is more web usage from a blackberry. Not buying it.

    Fishy

I don't think Blackberry devices make direct web requests, everything goes through the servers back at Blackberry HQ which proxy the requests onwards. I doubt this metric is so important that Blackberry would rig it but it does look fishy.

    OH..... WAIT, ... WAIT...

Now that Apple is not in the lead in some useless statistic, it's not about market share. Right?

    Why does it look fishy?

Hmm, is it really that hard to believe that people using the torch or other BB devices are using the web?

ohhh wait....just cause apples "growth" of web use has started to flatten...yes this has to be rigged.

As incredible as I know it must sound to everyone here, for once Wretchy's correct: the statistic is useless.

    Possible

I'll be honest. I was skeptical. Then I thought about the release of the iPhone 4.

I own a BB Bold 9000 and a Samsung Captivate. I've had the Bold for years on AT&T and had an unlimited data plan, which carried over onto my captivate when I got it after the iPhone 4 was release.

New iPhone 4 customers would have had to get AT&T's new jacked up, tiered data plan (250MB - 5GB or something). With these new data caps, I wouldn't be surprised if people are watching what they do online for risk of overage charges. That, plus the fact that other carriers have unlimited plans where Blackberries are offered.

In either case, I put over 7GB on my Captivate last month, so I don't see any of this.
