HP Slate 500 gets early hands-on impressions

The HP Slate 500 tablet has shipped, albeit slightly behind its expected schedule. A forum user on TabletPCReview has posted some photos of the unboxing of the Windows 7 device along with some early impressions. Heatlesssun said handwriting recognition on the 8.9-inch touchscreen works well, and general processing is fast, with Internet Explorer 8 working well in touch as well.

The slate uses a 1.86GHz Atom, 1GB of RAM and sports a 32GB solid-state drive. The posting also shows an AAA battery-powered touch pen works very well. Automatic mode writing is tricky, however. Charging makes the device warm, but not dangerously so, he added. There are no fans and operation is said to be ultra-silent. Battery life is expected to be at least five hours, which is adequate for Windows tablets but half that of an iPad.

The Windows Performance Index returns a score of 2.7 on the CPU and 5.2 with the SSD drive factored in.
