Spider-man reboot being shot with RED's EPIC cams

The RED user forum is afire with news of the RED EPIC camera being used to shoot the next Spider-Man movie, due for a release in 2012. The filming with four of the high-end devices started on Monday, and the cameras are also being used to film The Hobbit, as reported earlier, though 30 EPICs were purchased for this purpose. This movie is also due for a 2012 release, but Spider-Man started shooting first.

Cinematographer John Schwartzman talked about his experience on the RED User forum, and calls the EPIC camera a "true game changer." The film is being shot in 3D, using the cameras mounted on two 3ality TS-5 rigs. High speed shots were taken as part of the 22 set-ups. Schwartzman continues with the praises, saying only bulkier IMAX cameras offer more resolution than the EPIC. The camera is said to weigh 5lbs with an ultra prime lens mounted.

The cinematographer used the sensor at ISO 800 minus 1 stop for the mirror in daylight and 640 in tungsten light. Overall, he called the camera very sensitive. The produced images are being called stunning, with rich, beautiful color and the resolution of a Vistavision camera. The small size and low weight also made it possible to shoot the movie the way the director meant in 3D.

Finally, Schwartzman said the shooting is being done at 2.40 at 5K and the cameras are working hard and without any hiccups.
