LG: denial of Android 2.3 Optimus upgrade was 'premature'

LG says Android 2.3 might still come to Optimus

LG on Wednesday night corrected its claim that Optimus phones wouldn't get Android 2.3 with a brief statement on the subject. Its claims that it couldn't upgrade the phone to 2.3 were made by accident and that it didn't actually know whether an upgrade was an option. Without Google's Compatibility Definition Document or the software, a decision wasn't yet possible, the company said.

"LG released information prematurely regarding the minimum processor upgrade requirements for the LG Optimus [line]," it said. "Google recently announced the Gingerbread [Android 2.3] platform and has not yet published the Gingerbread Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) or the public branch open source code. Once the CDD and the source code is public, LG will evaluate the upgradability of the Optimus Series. We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding. We will alert you as soon as more information on this topic is available."

The public source code is expected within the next few weeks and will likely come with the CDD.

An engineer for Google, Don Merrill, has already stated that there is no set performance minimum for 2.3 and that hardware by itself isn't necessarily a barrier. The software release should also run as well or faster on a phone that already runs 2.2, such as the Optimus S. Any obstacles to LG are more likely to center around any interface skinning and custom apps.
