Howard Stern re-up with Sirius XM OKs iPhones
Sirius XM today confirmed a new five-year deal with its best-known host, Howard Stern, in a move that would significantly increase uptake of its mobile apps. The contract clears the jockey to play on not just satellite radio but also the Internet streaming apps, including the Android and iPhone apps. The deal lasts through the end of 2015.
Company executives wouldn't say whether it paid extra for the extra rights or how soon the mobile option would take effect.
Stern's previous deal had kept him off Internet sources and was considered a major obstacle to online listening, since his show has been considered integral to Sirius XM's growth and often its survival. He had originally jumped from free-to-air radio to satellite when only 600,000 listeners were subscribing but was partly responsible for getting the subscriber base up to 20 million.
