Nokia: no multi-touch keyboards on Symbian phones

(Update: clarification) In response to a user question in a YouTube comment, Nokia has claimed it won't bring multi-touch virtual QWERTY keyboards on the N8 or other new Symbian phones. Nokia said it's not something it's "currently working on," so there is a small possibility the features will eventually come to its Symbian phones. The behind-the-scenes skateboarding video was, appropriately, shot with Nokia's N8 flagship handset.

The company didn't clarify which features it wouldn't include or provide a justification for the decision.

Multi-touch keyboarding is often considered important to smartphones and is an important addition to Android 2.3. The implementation speeds up typing by allowing more than one key to be pressed at the same time.

Update: Nokia is promising an update in the first half of 2011 that will give Symbian phones portrait QWERTY, though multi-touch hasn't been mentioned.
