System uses red, green and blue lasers

Pioneer and MicroVision have collaborated to develop new heads-up display (HUD) technology geared for vehicles. The system, which was previewed this week at the CEATEC expo in Japan, utilizes MicroVision's PicoP display technology with red, blue and green lasers to bring full color to the display. The same technology is found in the company's latest pico projector.

The demonstration showed Google Maps navigation on the HUD, which was primarily developed by Pioneer. The navigation content will eventually be taken directly from an Android smartphone or other mobile handset, rather than relying upon a standalone navigation system.

Both companies expect the technology to arrive on the market by 2012, with initial production likely limited to aftermarket systems. The companies are in talks with car manufacturers regarding OEM integration, however. Pricing and further details have yet to be announced. [via Engadget]
