Dell: Venue Pro delays to fix problems, no ship date given

Dell explains Venue Pro delay to early January

Dell in a statement today explained why it had delayed the Venue Pro despite promising it would be available today. Dell liaison Amy noted that it was to fix the "several" problems with the Windows Phone 7 device, including the SIM card slot and Wi-Fi connections. The phones are being "reworked in the factories" and need time before they can ship again, she said.

Despite many getting tentative ship dates of January 5, Amy warned that there wasn't any estimate as to when the fixed versions would ship. "The news I hear changes daily and I hate to give you information that won't be true tomorrow," she told those on the Dell forums.

The Venue Pro has been a relative embarrassment to Dell's attempts to enter smartphones. A small number of them had shipped to make the November 8 launch of WP7, but users quickly began discovering that it had been rushed. Failure rates at the Microsoft stores that were carrying it were high enough that users might only find one model with a fully functional SIM slot in a store's entire inventory. Dell had never committed itself to a ship date, but other WP7 devices reached stores without the same flaws.
