mSpot preempts Apple with iTunes cloud locker for iPhone

mSpot iTunes cloud sharing goes live for iPhone

mSpot today brought its Internet-based music locker service to the iPhone with a native app (free, App Store). The title gives access to any unprotected music uploaded to mSpot's servers and will not only stream it but cache it locally. Changes to music on a Mac or Windows PC pushed to mSpot are synced to the Apple device, letting users listen to music even if on an iPod touch that isn't on Wi-Fi.

Users can force streaming only if they need to conserve space and should get access over both 3G and Wi-Fi. All of the metadata carries over, up to and including cover art and lyrics.

The service itself follows the company's existing business model for Android, Mac and Windows, where listeners can have up to 2GB of space for free. Those who need more can bump the storage up to 40GB for $4 per month.

The news beats Apple to its own rumored plans. It has reportedly had trouble getting licenses for an iTunes cloud locker since many labels perceive it as a second use rather than the online storage it would actually be. mSpot so far hasn't faced significant legal risks but is operating on risky ground, as labels have sued MP3tunes' founder for a similar strategy.

    Interesting idea

But useless with the current plans. 2GB is enough to see how it works, but it seems that if the whole point is to allow users to access all their music while on the go, they're going to need to offer a h*** of a lot more than 40 GB. I'd need close to 10 times that and there ain't no way I'd pay $39.99 month. $10, maybe.

I'll keep an eye on you, mSpot.
