T-Mobile slashes Samsung Android prices early

T-Mobile today quietly cut prices permanently on some of Samsung's Android devices unusually early. Its version of the Galaxy Tab is now the least expensive of any US carrier when attached to a contract, dropping $50 to $350. The Vibrant has itself dropped down to $150 on similar terms.

Few other price cuts have taken effect, but the Huawei-made T-Mobile Comet has dropped to $180 off-contract.

The reasons for the cuts aren't known. The Vibrant is now a few months old but is still the network's premier smartphone. Its Galaxy Tab was already tied for Sprint for the least expensive model on contract, while other carriers have yet to move on price.

As the smallest of the large national carriers, T-Mobile has often had to use price to draw in customers and may simply be hoping to get an edge over others. Early price cuts, however, are usually signs of slow sales. The last recent example was a price drop on the Garminfone, which dropped just weeks after launch and was a key factor in Garmin quitting smartphones just three months later. The cuts may reflect stiff competition from not just fellow Android supporters but Apple's iPad and iPhone.
