Flash 10.2 has tenth of 10.1's CPU consumption, says Adobe

YouTube among sites in conversion process

Flash Player 10.2, currently in beta, has just a tenth the CPU consumption of the v10.1 plugin in some cases, says Adobe product manager John Nack. A primary feature of v10.2 is Stage Video, which can shift most of the burden for Flash video to a GPU. GPU acceleration was first introduced in v10.1.

Genuine improvements in CPU usage are dependent on websites updating their custom players. Among the first parties to have updated is YouTube, although "others will follow," according to Nack. Some other likely candidates may include Vimeo and Dailymotion, both of which are dependent on Flash.

YouTube itself, however, is among a number of websites now offering HTML5 as an option for watching videos. While not suited to live streaming, the technology also doesn't require a plugin, and is less prone to crashes than Flash. The switch is at least partly traceable to Apple, whose iOS devices don't support Flash; correspondingly the company has heavily promoted HTML5, even going as far as leaving Flash off the 2010 MacBook Air by default.

Adobe: There Really Wasn't A Problem

Adobe: See? By just shifting a little of that stuff that a CPU does to a GPU, we made it even better! So we don't know why everyone hopping on Steve Jobs' coattails was complaining about the purported "performance issues" in Flash.

    Disingenuous

Adobe is saying that they are now ten times more efficient. However, I'm pretty sure this will only apply to H.264 or similar video, wrapped inside SWF or other Adobe container.

Unfortunately, this likely won't do ANYTHING for other Flash content. Just spend a few minutes on Playhousedisney.com, or Nickjr.com. Kids' games on these sites are undisputed world champions of memory and processing cycle wasting.

I have several user profiles on my MacBook. Two of them are kids. When they open these sites and I switch users to my own profile (under fast user switching), the computer pretty much freezes. It takes me 5 minutes to switch back to their profiles and kill Safari, after which computer goes back to normal.

I sincerely doubt that the new version will resolve this problem simply by offloading some work to the graphics card.

    After years of neglecting...

No thanks. After years of neglecting the Mac platform and their users, too little too late. Goodbye FLASH.

    Can't Wait to Try

Great. Maybe now I'll be able to enable Flash in my Browser again without watching the System Spike, the FANS wurring, and the Temp climbing to, not so good levels, I'm sure.

    A good thing (TM)

Okay it is not too often that I miss flash while browsing on my iPad. However there are a lot of sites I visit that are heavy into flash and any improvement Adobe can make for my desktop browser will be appreciated. We all know they are busting it out to keep Flash an attractive tool for web creation but the only thing that will save Flash is to open it up as in open source if is to have any future. Adobe cannot expect their buyout of Macromedia and it's then important Flash application to be bringing dividends forever.

    wrong, wrong, wrong

YouTube itself, however, is among a number of websites now offering HTML5 as an option for watching videos.

HTML5 isn't an option to watching videos, since HTML5 isn't a video option.

HTML5 has a 'video' tag, in which the browser should then understand it's a movie and play it. However, there's not even a standard as to what format that video has to be.

While not suited to live streaming, the technology also doesn't require a plugin, and is less prone to crashes than Flash.

It doesn't require a plugin, as long as your browser supports the video format. If it doesn't, than it does require a plugin.

And it's only less prone to crashing if the code within the browser (or plug-in) is written well enough. Then again, Flash is 600 more things than just a video playback plugin, so there's also more places for problems in there.

    How is this any better?

Sure you are off loading some of the demand to the GPU, but that doesn't solve the problem. This is basically trying to sweep the problem under the rug. Flash still eats resources and now it just will eat your GPUs resources instead of your CPU.

    good ole Adobe CEO

Still tap dancing and wondering why people give him ZERO credibility. It seems like not a week goes by when Adobe announces another Flash improvement while all the time still pretending that Steve Jobs and his very smart engineers do not know what they are complaining about. It also seems like, as time goes by, even the supporters of Flash are weakening. With Apple it's about the experience, with Adobe it is about pointing fingers and $$$.

    Adobe: "Flash! New and Improved!"
