HTC to open third R&D facility in the US
Phone maker HTC on Tuesday said it would lease an office in Durham, North Carolina that would be devoted to research and development. HTC plans to initially employ about 45 people at the building in early 2011 who would research new technologies for smartphones, tablets and other devices. HTC says it chose Durham because it gave the company access to technically knowledgeable workers.
The Durham location will be HTC's third research operation in the US, behind those in Seattle and San Francisco. The former is charged with developing the company's interface layers, including Sense, while its recent acquisition One & Co has been responsible for many of its recent industrial designs. HTC's corporate headquarters in the US are in Bellevue, Washington.
HTC is based in Taiwan but has increasingly stressed its US work as it leans more heavily on Verizon and other US carriers for its growth.
