Sketchy shot shows 'iPad mini' in Taiwan star's hands

Taiwan pop star holds up supposed iPad mini

A post by Taiwan celebrity and race driver Jimmy Lin has drawn attention this evening as he showed what appeared to be a small iPad. The photo of a "toy iPad mini" showed what appeared to be an almost literally shrunk 3G iPad with very few changes. While the photo was too small to show whether or not iOS is on the screen, it did show a working device using an interface layout consistent with what Apple uses.

Numerous doubts exist as to the accuracy of the shot. Both Taiwan and mainland China are known for deliberate iPad clones based on Android or Windows CE that in some cases are meant to resemble their Apple counterparts as closely as possible. Apple CEO Steve Jobs has also vocally opposed the concept of a small tablet as sacrificing too much of the user interface and screen area to justify its existence over a smartphone.

Lin hasn't elaborated further. Electronista believes the star's device likely isn't a real Apple product but is providing coverage both to trace the story and for the sake of the attention it has reportedly been drawing in southeast Asia. [via Akihabara]

Recently played with a Chinese iPad wannabe running Android. Yes, they did a good job of making the icons and background picture look like an iPad. But that was it. It sucked more than my Hoover. Totally, completely unusable.

Fake photo.. Did an image analysis on it.

The small iPad portion of the photo has been altered. If you zoom in and look very carefully, the background is obscured by the alteration in the area just above the left upper corner of the iPad. That area along with the iPad mini, show up bright on the image analysis. The larger iPad also shows up bright but this is mostly due to the Ferrari red background.

oh the fake photoshop analysis strikes again

all the experts finding flaws and determining pictures to be a fake - have done that many times with legitimate photo's.

It's not a photoshop fake. There are real 7" iPads - they aren't for sale, but Steve hasn't denied trying the form factor, and then ultimately ruling it out. He didn't rule it out by mere speculation - but by trying the smaller size.

    This is a good ad

For HOW MUCH smaller the Galaxy Tab really is compared to an iPad. Seven inches vs. 10" doesn't sound like a huge difference until you see it like this.

But WRT to that picture above, whether its 'shopped or not, that's not an iPad (ie an Apple product), on that you can rest assured. While I have no doubt Apple may have made a 7" prototype to try out, none of them were given out to Taiwanese race car drivers I feel very confident in saying. :)

    Such a fake

Just look at his fingers. They're straight. The fingers holding the REAL iPad are bent, like they're supposed to be. And I don't have any Photoshop experience to be able notice this, even on such a small picture.

    From WikiLeaks

A transcript of the top-secret conversation recorded in the concrete reinforced survival conference room one mile below Apple's Cupertino Headquarters:

Jobs: OK guys, what are we going to do with this 7" iPad we messed around with before I decided we wouldn't go with it?

Ive: How about we graft on some phone guts and sell it as a giant iPhone?

Jobs: No, dang it! And quit telling everyone that iPads are just giant iPhones. Now you got Motorola in on the act.

Ive: Well that's what they look like.

Jobs: Fine. Then you're next assignment is to design the iToilets for our new buildings.

Ive: How many do you need?

Jobs: That's classified. But I'll be down everyday after my Taco Bell lunch to test your prototypes personally.

Mansfield: How about we send it to that Apple Recycling Program you started? You know: green computing and all?

Jobs: Are you kidding me? Them dumpster divers will have it up on eBay in a heartbeat. No. We need something foolproof. Phil, you're a fool ... what do you think?

Schiller: I met this race car driver when I was overseas last month. Very pleasant fellow. We could give it to him. He seems trustworthy.

Jobs: How can you be sure he's trustworthy?

Schiller: He's world famous in Taiwan.

Jobs: Phil, you've done it again.

Schiller: That's why I make the big bucks.

It's a fake not because of anything about the picture but because if there *was* a 7" iPad, it would:

    a) have to be tested before release
    b) be a "secondary" model to the original size

Since Apple has only tested *one* "new" iPad device this year (iProd 2,1) it means there is only one iPad coming out this year, which means that it has to be the 10" one. If there was a second, smaller iPad coming out you'd see "iProd 2,2" as well as the "iProd 2,1" already noticed.
