Fox Mobile sold off, puts Bitbop into doubt

Fox Mobile sold in News Corp shakeup

News Corp said on Wednesday that it was selling off Fox Mobile to the investment group Jesta. The terms of the deal weren't given but offloaded Bitbop, its fledgling TV streaming service. Online ringtone shop Jamster and Mobizzo were also included with the deal, whose terms weren't given out.

Jesta hasn't said what it plans to do with the groups, but it comes while Bitbop was still in a protracted beta. It had Android and BlackBerry versions in place but had yet to become publicly accessible while development was underway for an iPhone edition. Fox Mobile had unusually decided against supporting the iPhone at first since it believed it was more important to fill out the relatively weak media features on Android and BlackBerry devices.

News Corp has been trying to shed unprofitable parts of its business in the past year to make its Internet sections healthier. It has threatened closing MySpace if its redesign doesn't stem losses. In its core news business, it has been putting up paywalls at previously free, ad-supported sites and has teased an iPad-specific subscription daily in an attempt to rekindle interest in paid news.
