Times Square New Year's gets official iPhone, Android apps

updated 12:05 pm EST, Wed December 22, 2010

Toshiba and Times Square team on iOS and Android

The Times Square New Year's Eve countdown received a symbolic modernization today as it has received its first mobile apps. A Toshiba-supplied app for iOS (free, App Store) and Android both offers the requisite countdown, including a live stream, as well as a unique tie-in to the countdown ball itself. Users will have the option of uploading a photo with Facebook voting that could help push it to one of the Toshiba-run displays in Times Square, including under the ball.

The app will have extras to fill out the day, such as the option of sending a "kiss" postcard or checking news, weather and history around New York City. It can adapt to the local time zone and supports check-ins for both Foursquare and Facebook Places along with Twitter updates.

    yawn

One of the most over-rated activities, on one of the most over-rated days of the year. All because humans apparently feel guilty if they go out, get drunk, and act like an idiot without an excuse like "But today is....!"

    Testiculo...

I've been to nyc on new year's eve 2x. The atmosphere is electric all over manhattan, people come together for a good fun time, and no, alcoholic beverages are not allowed in times square, you are screened before you are let into the area. I have not done times square on nye, but i've been through times square a few hours before the event. I wish it was that way all the time!

This app is exactly what i've been waiting for!!!!
