Another iPad 2 case leak points to big speaker

New iPad 2 case leak backs speaker plans

Claims that the next iPad would have a large speaker were supported today with the spotting of a listing on AliBaba for a pre-release silicone case. Unlike past case leaks, the new example from C&T Industry shows the previously mysterious back opening with a speaker grill in place. Its version of the opening doesn't run to the very bottom and suggests the speaker might be entirely rear-facing.

The case still fits in with earlier examples and has a space for a camera on the back as well as the mandatory mute switch and volume rocker. Although C&T uses an image of an iPad, it's believed this is for reference and not a direct indication of what the finished product will look like.

Case leaks are increasingly common for Apple mobile devices, as small Chinese often get unofficial access to the dimensions from contract manufacturers months in advance of release. Most of the tips so far have pointed to produced iPads shipping to Apple in January or February and releasing by April.

    Can't Be

Speaker grill out the BACK??? I'd rather believe it's a fan intake rather than a speaker. Pumping out the sound away from you is not something I would believe Apple would do.

    Not "big"

While there is an implication of a "bigger" speaker than the previous iPad iteration, there is no room in an iPad for a "big" or "large" speaker as your article maintains. Further, although a bigger speaker is implied, it is not a necessity. A larger grill could simply indicate that it allows more sound out from the current speaker resulting in more volume from the same sized speaker. It also could be a subwoofer to improve the sound from the regular speakers. The case also indicates a backward-facing camera, so it could house a speaker for playback and a microphone for recording.

It's a fake. Look at the dimensions.

There's one significant detail being overlooked here. The form factor for this case isn't 4:3 as the iPad is now. It's some widescreen variant. Apple didn't develop the iPad at its existing dimensions just to disregard them a year later. This is either a fake, or a case for some Chinese knockoff.

And just to reinforce my point. . .

. . . if you look closely at the icons, they are elongated. Someone simply took an iPad image and stretched it out. Sloppy. Very sloppy (I'm looking at YOU, Electronista). You guys really shouldn't report on every purported "leak" that comes out. Especially weak ones like this so easily debunked.

    @wingsy

Although I agree, the grille out back isn't for a speaker placed directly behind it, Apple did put the speaker in a stupid location on the current iPad. I have to put my hand behind it to redirect the sound towards me. When I got the Apple ipad case the sound dramatically improved because of that ridge that goes around the outside of the case (which initially didn't make sense to me until I figured out that it has multiple purposes - one of which is to redirect the speaker sound towards the user).

The iPad needs a front-facing speaker(s) or at least something to direct sound forwards.

Apple also needs to change the "home" button's square graphic into an apple logo. Bugs me to no end that they wouldn't put their logo somewhere it can readily be seen, rather than covered, with a case.

    Thank you very much...

...for a complete waste of time.
    It's an obvious pattern:
    1. Someone makes a 'prediction' or there's a 'leak' (even though the things they say are exactly the same as the things said half a year ago).
    2. This prediction/leak gets tons of media coverage.
    3. There's a case of some sort or a fake photo that agrees with the leak.
    4. Something new comes out, and all the old cases/photos are thrown away.

These cases are publicity stunts. Why else would they keep changing so much?

    Not a very good case.

Notice that the cutout for the home button is not centered with the home button. Not by a long shot.

    "Small Chinese" ???

Must be a word missing in here somewhere.

"Case leaks are increasingly common for Apple mobile devices, as small Chinese often get unofficial access to the dimensions from contract manufacturers months in advance of release."

So the taller Chinese people aren't privy to these dimensions. :-)
