Obama cites Steve Jobs as example of American dream

Someone Americans 'should expect to be rich'


President Barack Obama has cited Apple CEO Steve Jobs as an embodiment of the American dream, according to a report. In discussing the issue of how the wealthiest people in America today are wealthier than ever in America’s history, Obama said, “And something that's always been the greatest strength of America is a thriving, booming middle class, where everybody has got a shot at the American dream…” Obama then moved to talking about Apple and its iconic CEO.

He continued, “So that we celebrate wealth. We celebrate somebody like a Steve Jobs, who has created two or three different revolutionary products. We expect that person to be rich, and that's a good thing. We want that incentive. That's part of the free market.”

The past decade has been a remarkably successful decade for Apple and its redoubtable CEO. This year has seen Jobs not only singled out by Obama for a special mention, he has also been named CEO of the Decade by MarketWatch. Over this period Jobs has led Apple from being a niche player, to becoming the central force in shaping the future of mobile computing the world over.

    Well ... yeah!

    Wow, the American Dream ... there's a phrase I haven't heard since the super-rich smothered the middle class with a pillow ...

    But yeah, you know what? Steve Jobs IS an example of the American Dream. His early life was fraught with obstacles, but through a combination of creativity and diverse experiences, he developed himself into a leading figure in our society of how to do things right.

    If you haven't taken a look at his Stanford speech lately, or ever -- all I can say is I've rarely heard anything so inspiring and right this side of TEDTalks.

    Why does everyone forget to mention

    the guys like Jobs, Gates, and Zuckerberg were never really poor. They had good, if not great, homes and went to really good schools. None of the CEOs come from a ghetto neighborhood (even our president, who claims a rough upbringing, grew up in Hawaii and went to Columbia / Harvard). So, really, the American Dream is for those privileged enough to already have "the leg up."

    American companies manufacturing solely abroad reduces the American economy by about $1 trillion dollars a year. It is nearly equal to the US trade deficit with China. How many Americans can $1 trillion dollars a year employee? No other country allows such unfavorable trade imbalances to occur.
    The president singled out Jobs. I'm mentioning what's wrong with the choice and the message the choice sends. The president would have been better served to pick an American who has lived the dream without exporting tens of thousands of jobs.
    Not doing manufacturing is costing the country it's current and future prosperity.
    As for the snow leopard software being designed in california, the disk it is written on was imported. Maybe the box and shrink wrap was made in the USA, maybe. Perhaps the box was only closed in the USA.
    And your snow leopard box stating" designed and made in America" may only be referring to the software/program. Sounds suspect to me.

    Name any products that you buy and use that are made in america? From your underwear to your gucci watch, to your fisher price toys...not made in america...get a clue..

    if it was made in America you would also pay WAY higher prices. Be thankful there is slave labour in the world pumping out your new toys everyday.

    Thank goodness cars, American and foreign, are still made in America. Are they beyond affordability? Are the roads empty? The U.S. Postal Service's uniforms are all made in the USA. Hundreds of thousands of American companies not only conceptualize/intellectualize their products in the USA, but also manufacture them there. Think of your breakfast cereals, soft drinks, beers and wine, non-designer clothing,etc.
    There is a website that exhaustively list products made in America: www.americansworking.com Perhaps you should check it out.
    Further, Computers today cost about half what they cost ten years ago. And multinationals are continuing to make record profits quarterly. It is not like paying Americans to assemble Apple products will double the retail price. It may add 10% to 20%. But, it doesn't have to. The need to make record after record profitability gains is why the price will be higher. The reason multinationals manufacture where labour is exploited is to increase value for shareholders, not to add value to the lives of people where their products are sold.
    And no, you" be thankful there is slave labour in the world pumping out your new toys everyday." I am disgusted by it.
