   But family got accessories: Otter case for iPhone 4, Bamboo pad for daughter laptop, iPads for sister and Dad. I am waiting on iPad v2 to buy for more family and employees. Merry Christmas.

   Not much

   Basically, my Yuletide loadout includes some shirts, a copy of The Laramie Project, and about $700 for spending on various tech. I'm planning on purchasing parts to build a gaming Hackintosh.

   Got a Nano here

   Been loving the new nano. I also unexpectedly got a new TV. I got a stack of games, turned on my TV for the first time in months, and it fizzled and blacked out, with badly inverted colors. eCost saved me with a stupid good special on a 1080p 22" LCD TV, couldn't have been better.

   iPad

   I kept waiting for a good refurb and it finally came along. Sure, I might sell it to buy the new one whenever it comes out, but I was tired of being without one. Guardian Eyewitness is AMAZING, and I'm just discovering all the other cool apps. I *love* surfing on it and I *love* watching videos on it.

   Christmas Gifts?

   You must be joking. I got a tiny little bit of cash from family. Enough to help me pay about a third of December's medical insurance premium. I've been without work for five years since a stroke at work. The company has refused to pay on my union-negiotated contract and the union has (so far) refused to take them to court. The contract stipulated that if a debilitating illness such as mine happened while at work, that the employer would provide a year's salary, a year's medical coverage, plus a 6-figure disability payment. Instead, I'm living in my mother's basement. She is retired and living off of savings and a pension that is being eaten away by inflation, non-existant interest rates, and caring for me. (We went through all of my savings in the first three years.) The government has said I'm ineligible for assistance because I hadn't worked enough quarters prior to my stroke (I was in school previously). I would have loved to have gotten Mom an iPad because her arthritis is so bad they she can barely sign her name any more, let alone type. I figure touching the virtual keyboard might be easy enough for her to actually send e-mails. That will have to wait though. In the meantime, interest on student loans keeps stacking up (and they keep threatening to foreclose), because keeping medical insurance paid is the primary concern. Oh, and by the way, my insurance is classified as a "cadillac" plan under the new Healthcare Law because of its low deductible and excellent coverage; if I'm forced off my current plan by law or penalties, my annual health care costs are only going to go up. So, my point? Articles like this can be offensive. Not everyone in America had a nice Christmas, or even a nice Christmas for the past five years. Such writings only demonstrates to those of us being pushed into the cracks how much the wealthy elite on the coasts don't really care about the things they claim too.

   HTC Touch Phones

   Our family replaced 2 iPhones with Sprint HTC Touch phones. I've been a huge Apple product fan for 25 years, but I have to say the iPhones have really been a disappointment. So far the HTC models have been faster in all respects and completely reliable (no dropped calls or sudden-quit applications).
   
   Sorry Apple. I love my MacBook Pro, but the iPhone really sucked - glad I got rid of it.

   Union = INTITLED punks, it's all about "me. me, me". Once you stop contributing (dues, pension contributions) you become insignificant; and yes, I belong to one myself but not by choice, for i too went through rough times a decade ago and the position I landed was unionized.
   
   Anyway, please DO NOT GIVE UP. Your time will come, this I promise; after which you WILL be able to help your mother out and give her an iPAD (second gen) and toutor her in all it's glory.

   Sparkle Video card

   Sparkle 8400 GS "pci" that's not a typo, "pci" card. - yes I got it for Christmas, and Amazon even gift wrapped it.
   
   It's to make an old computer work with a 1080p monitor. It's got a serverworks motherboard, the pci-e slot can only be used for hard drive controllers - does not work with video cards - I kid you not.
   
   So, a pci based card, to replace the onboard ES1000 32mb. If I had installed it, I could attach that old beast to the 1920x1080 monitor on my desk.
   
   Didn't install it...I'm just so tired of that old computer, next problem the Opteron 256 3.0GHz are so old, they don't support virtualization. Ugh, without AMD-V virtualization runs like garbage.
   
   Now it's a fine old computer in that Opteron 256's perform admirably for their extremely advanced age - I wouldn't run anything else out of that era - and it does have 32GB of RAM, which is still a lot, even today.
   
   But - I dunno, I really want to retire that beast and move on. tsk tsk, what to do, what to do.
   
   I like Mac's a lot...would love to buy a $1499 tower from apple, but they haven't done that since the G4 days. I need a 4-core processor, minimum. A new computer should have that. May go with a refurb iMac, thats about the only option from apple, that'll get you 4 cores and under $2000 buck.
   
   Get rid of the old monitor, the old computer...one refurbed mac from apple, toss out the crappy stock drive and put in an SSD. It would be a nice computer, but a whole lot more $$$ than a $35 sparkle video card, thats for sure.

   Union membership

   Union's have been vilified as costing american corporations in terms of being competitive with costs - so much so that average guy on the street probably thinks of Unions as being powerful and if nothing else, really going to bat for the worker.
   
   ha...as you've pointed out, that isn't reality.
   
   I was a union member in my youth too. I worked at a satellite office, where there was only one manager, and me.
   
   And the manager was basically asking me to do illegal things, and I thought I could lodge a complaint with union - to which they told me to shut the heck up and stop making trouble.
   
   I quickly learned that unions don't really have the power, or even the desire to represent the average worker to that level. That's not to say they didn't show up at the bargaining table at contract negotiation time and try to negotiate a package of benefits to the worker.
   
   As far as I know, they actually did that. But they certainly weren't capable of doing what I had imagined they could do, before joining the union.
   
   The reality is quite a bit more clouded than the public perception.

   Today in the news

   Various Mac users reported having their new holiday gifts stolen from their premises. One victim, who only wanted to be identified by the name 'brondee73', didn't understand it. "We just got new iPhones. How in the world did anyone find out about it and take them so quickly? We're devastated. They weren't even stolen by Apple fans. They left the iPhone boxes! No one who cared would do that."
