updated 10:25 am EST, Mon December 27, 2010

Galaxy Player coming to CES, mimics Galaxy S line

Samsung introduced a new media player, which mimics the styling and many of the same features as the Galaxy S line of handsets. The YP-GB1 will use Android 2.2 out of hte box and is powered by the same 1GHz processor as its counterpart. AMOLED supply shortages will lead it to use a four-inch Super Clear LCD with an 800x480 resolution and will be available in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities.

Its rear camera drops down to 3.2 megapixels, but it will take a cue from the Nexus S with a VGA front facing shooter for chat. Wi-Fi is onboard, as is Bluetooth 3.0, a T-DMB TV tuner in Korean models, SoundAlive audio processing software and a GPS camera. The device will have enough power to play HD video (likely 720p). A microSD memory card slot is present for expansion, and power comes from a 1,200mAh removable battery.

Pricing and release dates remain unknown, but should be revealed next week.

The hardware could be the first major, credible answer from Android to the iPod touch. Android media players exist from Archos, but it and most others are typically niche players and have specs that often trail Apple's releases. [via SamsungHub]
