Sears, Kmart get movie service thanks to RoxioNow

Retailers Sears and Kmart have enlisted Sonic Solutions' RoxioNow platform to bring out a new movie download service. Called Alphaline Entertainment, the service releases new movies the same day they arrive on Blu-ray and DVD in stores. The service is gradually being rolled out on various connected devices.

The multi-year agreement will see a chip that embeds the service into devices such as portable media players, Blu-ray Disc players, cellphones and HDTVs. RoxioNow allows either rentals or purchases of new movies. Users can also watch TV shows the day after their first airings on their respective networks.

Prices and a live date for the service haven't been revealed.
