Giveaway may cement app's ranking

RunKeeper Pro is free through to the end of January, developer FitnessKeeper has announced. Available for iPhone and Android devices, the app uses GPS tracking to monitor run statistics such as distance, pathing, speed and calories burned. The data is uploaded to the RunKeeper website, where it can be shared as a profile page or via Twitter and Facebook.

Pro is distinguishable from the regular Free version of RunKeeper by the inclusion of coaching help and custom audio cues. The deal is likely to meant cement RunKeeper's popularity rather than create a major boost, as Apple has already named the Pro app as one of the highest-grossing apps of 2010. The company notably charges extra for an Elite service that lets people follow progress in the middle of a run.
