WakeMate warns USB chargers may catch fire, issues recall

WakeMate faces USB power brick recall after launch
WakeMate has sent out a warning that its new sleep helper device's USB power charger was defective. A notice to customers explained that there was at least one instance of the brick catching fire. Every user was asked to stop using the adapter immediately and return it, although the company stressed that the WakeMate itself was safe and that charging from a computer would work.
In an explanation on the Hacker News forum, the company believed it was the result of noisy electricity overheating the integrated circuit managing the charge. The warning had been sent out within an hour of the first incident being made public.
WakeMate's issue follows a long development process that took over a year from when the device was first announced. The device is unique in combining an actigraphy sensor with an iOS or Android phone to track sleeping habits and trigger a wake-up alarm when a person's body is ready to be fully alert.
