Feature faster transfer rate, improved security

Samsung has announced two new portable drive lines and one desktop external hard drive line for the consumer market. The new drives use the USB 3.0 interface, which can provide data transfer rates up to five gigabits per second. Samsung's premium portable drives offer up to 1TB storage capacity, 256-bit hardware based encryption, and can perform automatic or continuous backup. The premium portable drives also ship with software to perform encrypted backups. The drives will be available in Onyx black, Sapphire blue, and Coral pink.

Samsung's basic portable external drives are sized up to 1TB. The cases have a matte finish to hide scratches and fingerprints, and will come in four colors: Brown black, Noble beige, Clay orange, and Mist gray. A USB docking station will be sold separately for both the basic and premium line products to facilitate data transfer to a PC.

The new desktop external drives come in 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB storage capacities. The case is designed with an eye toward reducing desktop space, and has LED status lights at the base. The new desktop drives will be available in Brown black and Noble beige.

The company plans to announce pricing in April, when all three external hard drive lines become available.
