Plans replace IR tech newer RF technology
Freescale and RealD have teamed to develop a new RF technology for active shutter 3D glasses. The jointly developed solution uses Freescale’s RF4CE platform for the over-the-air 3D synchronization combined with advanced lens switching, filtering and optical technology from RealD, resulting in an enhanced 3D TV active eyewear solution. Freescale’s MC1323x System on a Chip (SoC) powers the new platform.
The two companies have chosen to implement RF in active shutter 3D glasses as it overcomes line-of-site and field-of-vision limitations in older IR technologies. The older technology can also be prone to interference from incandescent and fluorescent lighting used in some homes.
Freescale is currently demoing the technology at CES 2011 and hopes to encourage OEM 3D display manufacturers to implement the technology in future products.
