Microsoft Seattle store to sit opposite Apple

Microsoft's second retail store near its headquarters will once again follow the pattern of opening directly opposite an Apple store, according to new city permits. The Windows developer will take over the Miller-Pollard furniture shop at University Village, putting only a small parking lot between the two. No clues have been given as to when the store would open.

The company has often tried to get as close as possible to Apple stores in hopes of attracting undecided buyers back towards Windows and mobile platforms like Windows Phone and Zune. They also emulate the business model and have features such as a full-service support bar, functioning demo systems and bright, spacious environments.

Unofficial studies have suggested relatively little success, depending on the circumstances. Microsoft's stores often don't have any price advantage over a nearby big-box store and have considerably fewer exclusive products than an Apple location.

Microsoft has always cast the stores an experiment where it would pass on what it learns to Best Buy and other retailers. It hasn't said how much traffic or revenues its stores generate, however, where Apple has usually cited retail as a key driver and has over 300 stores, many of which are now more profitable per square foot than luxury stores such as Tiffany's. Can't even build a store that stands on its own.

    I visited MSP

I went to the store in MSP. Was a little less than impressed.

    Wrote about it here:

Store just seems to lack focus, sort of like it doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up.

MS has made so spectacularly bad business decisions over the years (as well as many good ones, likewise for Apple), but this one is likely to eventually top the list, if for nothing else than pure hubris. Anyone want to start a dead pool?

that's because Microsoft lacks focus. They are like the 10 year old boy who just follows the bouncing ball wherever it goes.

The fat, slow 10 year old boy who's always going to be several steps behind.

    location location location

well those are good and high trafic locations. I would most likely do the the same thing too. find me a better location and I'd build there. if not then I'll take the best location for my stores thank you.

    This could be dangerous

According to the principles of feng shui, placing sources of good/evil energy so close to one another could result in a mana vortex sweeping down the thoroughfare between the stores. Mallgoers be warned!

    My money down the drain!

As a stock holder I am pissed that MS is wasting money on this useless c***. They know that they cannot compete with Apple so why waste the money. Ballmer is just an a..h..e. The man has no brains.
