ASUS tablets already delayed, may not get Android 3.0

ASUS rep says tablets stall to Q3 with Android 2.3

ASUS' Eee Pads and Eee Slates using Android have not only been delayed but might ship without Android 3.0, company marketing specialist John Swatton said Wednesday. The announcements, which mentioned a spring shipping window and the new OS across the board, were a "mistake," he told the Inquirer. They would instead ship in summer and would be limited to Android 2.3, Google's most recent phone OS.

It may also be that the MeMo, Slider and Transformer might have to drop Android Market and use an ASUS-run store. While removal of Android Market was "to be confirmed," according to Swatton, Android 2.x devices without phone functionality reportedly can't use the official store. It's not clear how accurate this would be, as the Galaxy Tab has Android Market even in versions that can't make calls while Archos and Toshiba have both had to make their own portals.

Any significant delay could hurt ASUS' chances at getting significant share in the tablet market and offsetting stalling netbook sales in the face of the iPad and Galaxy Tab. It has Windows-based tablets that are expected to expand Microsoft's platform beyond its niche, but the majority of its lineup and most of its success revolves around Google's OS.

    Wow...

Apple really caught all of these "competitors" with their pants down around their ankles didn't they. Are you telling me that none of these guys saw the iPad coming? Has it really been almost a year since the iPad shipped and nobody has a shipping product yet except for the 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab at the same basic price as the 10" iPad? Is Apple really that good or are these guys just that dumb? They can't even get a knock-off copy out the door? CES is over and we're still waiting. I'm dumbfounded and speechless.

    Amazing...

Show everyone a tablet at the CES, and then admit that it's not even close to the actual product.
The Windows tablets are obviously going to fail... they're doing exactly what computer companies have been trying to do unsuccessfully for a year; any decent sales would be from people saying "I want a tablet but I will never buy anything from Apple because I hate them".
The Android tablets have a better chance, but they're still not a threat to the iPad.

    Clearly, lkrupp...

...you're not dumbfounded and speechless. You had to come and let everyone know how much you love Apple in a report about Asus. Believe it or not Apple fanboys, some of us just don't want Apple products, they are not what I'm looking for in a device. It's as simple as that, you pick the device that works for you and I'll pick the device that works for me, GUESS what? We both win, competition is good. I know Apples place in the world, I wouldn't have the awesome Android 2.3 OS I have now without Apple, fanboys are fools if they think the iPhone 4 would have been as good as it is (and it is) without the threat of Android. The iPad maybe perfect for some, for me it's a no go, I'd rather wait another 3 months for an Android tablet that totally suits my needs than buy one. That's the way the world works.

    facebook_Benjamin...

I agree that people need to select what suits them so good luck to all. I don't agree that the iPhone 4 is as good as it is because of Android. Remember what Android looked like when Apple released the first iPhone, Android was basically a Blackberry look alike (Android was taking its cues from BB). No doubt innovation builds on existing innovations but I don't think Android is the sole reason that the current iPhone is such a sleek consummer product. I definitely think Android is taking its cues from iOS at the moment and will most likely be the case for 12-24 moths time at least.

    And Clearly, Bennyboy ...

... for not wanting Apple products, you spend an awful lot of your time looking on Apple forums for non-Apple news. And then responding to posts at length.

    Oh benny

If apple made a device that was what you were looking for you wouldn't buy it. It's you pumpkin that has an issue. Now off you go to a forum where somebody actually gives a c*** about what you do and don't want.

    Haters

I don't understand these idiotic haters. Why do they waste their time on Mac-centric sites when all that's going to happen is their comments will be down ranked to oblivion anyway.

    @ chefpastry - "I don't understand these idiotic haters."

I don't claim to understand them, but maybe there's an analogy in professional sports. Fans at their home stadium cheer the home team and boo the visitors. It's fair, it happens every day, and within limits it's expected.

But, of course, there's always a few of the visiting team's fans at every game. They'll boo the home team and cheer the visitors. They're the trolls of the physical world, and they're far braver than internet trolls. The visiting team's fans can get their butts kicked. In person.

And they're probably not getting paid for it. Microsoft, Google, and other tech companies pay people to hype their products in forums. And to razz their competitors' products. The best paid shills use the "concern troll" approach. As in "I really like the new ABC products, but several things really worry me about ABC company's strategy."

Bozos like fbBenji are obviously not pros. But it's amazing how many concern troll posts you can find. Especially in Apple forums.

Any number of reasons why rivals can't get

their tablets out. Apple had been designing a tablet and tablet OS for years, so Apple had plenty of time to test, formulate and prepare production. Most of the rivals went from sitting in a couch to hopeful production in about six months. I believe most of the rivals figured they could build a decent tablet from off-the-shelf netbook guts since they had easy availability to them. However, things got a little more complicated when it came to touch-screens and poor battery life caused by the less efficient Intel Atoms.

The competitors at first tried to reverse-engineer the iPad by using notebook computer parts. But Apple had built their iPad from the more efficient but much more expensive iPhone parts and that was probably what sunk the competitors. Apple was already using millions of those iPhone components and could easily obtain those parts which were probably ordered well in advance in bulk. Apple undoubtedly had the tablet OS ready for some time and just waiting to put it in something. All the iPad rivals have is Google's Android and even Google wasn't ready for any tablet assault and the rivals really should wait until Honeycomb is finished even if it does cause them delays.

Currently, with all the Android tablet competitors trying to make an assault on Apple at one time, there's likely no way sufficient components are going to be easy to get for large-scale production runs. China's factories weren't geared up for anything like that at a moment's notice. Apple had obviously planned out everything well in advance. Start iPad production, announce the iPad, market the iPad, sell the iPad. Still, even Apple didn't know how many they would ultimately need but at least planned ahead for higher production runs if necessary. Yes, the rest of the industry was caught with their pants completely off and probably still at the dry cleaners. Apparently, Apple's iPad 2 is going to clean their clocks again this year. Destroy them, Apple.

    Hey idiots.

The problem with you blind Apple fanboys is that of all the things you are clearly blind to, your own blind dedication is at the top of the list. You are unable to get your head around the possibility that there is no one perfect product for every single person and that iOS isn't for everyone but the people it is for, it's perfect, CLEARLY Steve Jobs gets that, his blind fans don't.

If this was news that the iPad2 was pushed back, electronista.com (you know the site I came to, not MacNN something the MacNN posters are utterly unable to grasp when they dribble out the same old "y r u hear" replies) would be filled with Apple fanboys proclaiming that "Apple know best, it'll be out when it's ready".

I'm not entirely sure what "not a pro" is meant to mean but I hold a masters in computer science and own an iPhone 4 and a HTC Desire. I've owned almost every model of Apple computer since the 1970s and currently have a separate domain on our network made up entirely of Apple computers from different model ranges, as well as almost all our users using iPhones as their work phones, we spend a massive amount of money with Apple. So I'm going to assume that "not a pro" means "not an Apple fanboy that will blindly swallow whatever I'm told to swallow".
