Millenial says Android now larger than iOS in ads

Android devices have finally overtaken iPhones in mobile ad share, Millennial Media found in its results for December. After a virtual draw the month before, Android has moved up to 46 percent of ad traffic and pushed the iPhone down to 32 percent. Google's platform grew rapidly for all of last year and jumped from virtually no presence at the start of 2010 by a large 3,130 percent to reach where it is today.

The sheer quantity of Android devices on the network also helped eliminate the platform's historic weakness in generating mobile ad revenue. Google's OS had 55 percent of the revenue in the fall, adding an extra 13 percent compared to the summer, where Apple could claim 39 percent.

Millennial didn't say whether Android still held the lead in overall devices, though this was less likely given its still small share of MP3 players and tablets. Apple is the device leader and has nearly 21 percent after factoring in the iPad and iPod touch. Unusually, four of the most popular Android devices of 2010 only just appeared on the list, including the Desire and its Nexus One sibiling as well as the Droid Incredible and the Evo 4G. HTC moved up to the third spot as a result.

A breakdown of the carrier mix helped reinforce Verizon's heavy dependence on Android and showed it as the single largest carrier, at 21 percent, where AT&T had just eight percent even with its disproportionately larger ad share.

Whether or not the results will maintain themselves in early 2011 isn't as evident. The launch of the HTC Thunderbolt and Motorola Atrix 4G to carry its sales, although it has historically fared poorly on AT&T even with the presence of high-end phones like the Samsung Captivate.

    how long?

it looks like the iPhone will be embracing it's 5% market share much faster than expected.
im just wondering how long till then, and how long will it take Jobs and friends at Apple to realize that whatever they are doing is only half working.

    Yes sorlag, how long...?

before Jobs and friends at Apple confirm that half of the profitable market is in Apple's 5% share?

BTW, the market is likely to be reshaped by Verizon signing on and by the inevitable release of the next iPhone model.

Furthermore, "note that Apple is the device leader and has nearly 21 percent after factoring in the iPad and iPod touch." Continued strong sales (and the soon to be expected 2nd generation release) of the iPad comprises considerable momentum that Android devices will have to overcome. The continued growth of strong development of apps for iOS devices also helps solidify Apple's grasp.

I doubt that Jobs and friends are losing much sleep beyond worrying about meeting increased consumer demand. It's taking a gargantuan effort to do that as is.

"how long will it take Jobs and friends at Apple to realize that whatever they are doing is only half working. "

It may take a while as they are busy counting their money.

Now a question for you...how long will it take you and all the other Androidies to understand it's not just about marketshare? I don't mean just for Apple but in business, PERIOD.

    One more thing

With the exception of the US, where Android has, in recent months, overtaken iOS in market share (and we'll see what happens to that with Verizon on board), elsewhere in the developed world, iPhone has consistently had the largest market share, and Android has NOT been able to displace it.

What we are looking here is the AD SHARE, and the numbers are consistent with the reality. Android users are very much reluctant to pay for their apps. There is significantly higher percentage of FREE apps on Android then on iOS. Those free apps are supported by ads. In addition, the OS itself is extremely chatty, sending back user data, which makes it very attractive to advertisers for "carpet bombing" advertising. With iOS, advertising is much more precise and effective, so much less is needed for the same net effect.

For fans of iOS, this is great news: hardly anyone in the world likes advertising, so being on a platform with a smaller share of that can only be good.

Free version vs paid version of apps

I'll bet that it's because the Android users are more likely to use ad laden, free versions of apps instead of paying for the ad-free, paid versions.
