AT&T reshuffling messaging in counter to Verizon iPhone

ATT to have 1000 messages for 10 dollars

The first evidence of AT&T reworking its plans, possibly to give a better standing against the Verizon iPhone, has been made public through what's potentially a scoop from Best Buy. The carrier would drop its $5/200 and $15/1,500 messaging plans in favor of a new, $10/1,000 messaging plan. The $20 unlimited plan would remain, GearFuse was shown, and would be required on basic messaging phones.

Customers would be grandfathered in on any existing plan they have. New plans would take effect starting January 23.

The approach hasn't been confirmed by AT&T but would follow a pattern similar to that it took for its capped data plans. A $10 plan would give middling messaging users a cheaper option than the $15 or $20 plans but would also raise the minimum price of entry by $5 for most users. A user opting for 450 minutes of voice, 250MB of data and a basic text messaging plan would now have to pay $65 per month.

Verizon hasn't detailed whether or not it will change its plans for the iPhone. At present, it lets users pay $5 per month for 250 messages but only ups the available messages to 500 with its own $10 add-on.

I would consider bumping my plan down..

...but I want to check my text message history to make sure I have wiggle room and won't go over 1000. Funny, they don't seem to offer historical monthly graphs of text message usage. Very subtle way of encouraging people to keep overkill plans. I guess I'll have to dig back through my bill history online instead.

Normally I hate big government but...

For $#%@! sake! The FTC needs to step in and force them to show us why texting bandwidth is more than talking. (it's not) I have to pay $20 a month because I send/receive 3700 texts average. Yet I use maybe 42m of my phone and I have around 6000 roll over minutes!!!!

How about letting me chose to convert roll over minutes to texts??? HUH? Go eat a di

    huh?

So their 'solution' is to basically hike the price up for any texting plan at all?

Was there a reason they couldn't keep the $5 plan and add the $10?

Why do they need to show you that? Since when is a company obligated to charge customers "cost + reasonable profit"?

Apple makes a fortune selling stuff with 30% margins. Should we get the FTC to show why a MacBookPro costs $1899 instead of $1399? (and any arguments on Apple and covering 'R&D' or other c*** would have some merit if Apple didn't have 50 billion in cash reserves - apparently it all isn't going to R&D).

The response on Apple is "They charge it because people will pay it". The same holds true to the carriers. Why should they not have the same opportunity to rake in the cash as Apple or any other company?

Text messaging is nothing but a luxury. As is having a data plan. As is, apparently, having a low-cost Mac tower with a couple of PCIe slots. They aren't requirements to life or safety. If you don't like the plans, get other plans. Go to other carriers. If you don't like anyone's options, go without. The only way the carriers will change their pricing and structures is if people just stop buying them.

Right now, texting for carriers is like iPhones and iPads for Apple. People are sucking them up at current pricing. So why in the h*** would they want to lower prices?

BTW, I don't like Apple's current line-up of laptops or desktops. So I haven't bought a new Mac in 4 years. If I need to get one, I'll end up getting a mini or a cheap-a** MacBook. But I'm voting with my wallet by not buying a $3000 MacPro just to get some PCIe slots. That's my right. Will it help? Doubtful. But it is still my right. And if enough do it, maybe Apple would change.

    Move beyond pricing, ATT!

Fighting Verizon on price, network and coverage will never work. If ATT wants to drive messaging, it had better partner with a full-feature client app that is platform agnostic, and that offers some some real eye-candy, like MeetMe(TM) and Point-and-Chat(TM).
This sounds like a job for Social Messaging(TM).
Who are they going to call?
    PoKos!
