Asahi intros strong glass for devices, won't name customers

Asahi Dragontrail to rival Gorilla Glass

Asahi Glass unveiled a new form of ultra-strong glass meant to take on Corning's Gorilla Glass for use in mobile devices. Dragontrail has the same near-scratchproof surface as its American rival, will survive most common drops and can take 16kg (35lbs) of concerted pressure that could bend the display without breaking. The survivability lets hardware manufacturers use thinner glass as well and can result in both slimmer and thinner devices.

It's not known how well Dragontrail compares to Gorilla Glass, though both usually exhibit the same properties. Asahi showed both small and large panes and expected Dragontrail to be used in phones, tablets and TVs.

The Japanese company already has deals for use of its glass but couldn't say who any of its first customers are. Dell, LG, Motorola and Samsung are some of Corning's customers. Apple has been rumored as a Corning customer but has never said which company makes the toughened front glass on the iPhone 4. [via AP]

    Slimmer and thinner?

Perhaps it should be slimmer and lighter.
