Barnes & Noble periodical sales exceed estimates

Barnes & Noble said it has exceeded sales expectations of its Nook Newstand magazines and newspapers. With more than 650,000 subscriptions and single-copy sales, the company attributed much of this success to its Nook Color. The device is rare among reading-focused devices and can handle tasks that a paper version of a periodical can't match.

Barnes & Noble said that subscriptions sold since Christmas Day represented a 1.5X increase over those sold over the entire 12 months before that.

The Nook Color itself is a relative sales success, becoming Barnes & Noble's best-selling item this past holiday season, when demand also exceeded expectations. It has never quantified those numbers and is believed to have sold far fewer than Amazon or Apple. Data suggested it may have shipped 420,000 Nooks of all kinds with the Nook Color as the most popular.
