Samsung hopes to overtake Apple in notebooks this year

Samsung notebooks may spike 60pc in 2011

Samsung is planning a major 60 percent spike in its notebook shipments in a bid to overtake Apple in the worldwide notebook arena, part suppliers said Monday. It had shipped 10 million portables in 2010 but hoped to move 16 million to 17 million this year. Both companies were nearly tied through the first nine months of 2010 and saw Apple move just 150,000 more systems, according to Digitimes' IDC numbers, or enough that Samsung was within striking distance.

The Korean company isn't thought to have much trouble reaching its target, since its in-house manufacturing of many of the parts it needs helps it predict its PC deliveries more accurately.

Whether or not the target will be enough may be the main concern. Apple shipped 23 percent more Macs during the fall than a year ago at 4.13 million, but the company has in recent years made a pattern of avoiding much of the usual post-holiday slump and could match or beat Samsung. ASUS may be the most at risk since it plans to ship 22 million PCs but doesn't necessarily have similar growth.

Samsung has usually acted independently of Apple's plans but, at CES, signaled more of a direct intent to chase Apple. Both the Slider PC and 9 series notebook were targeted more consciously at iPad and MacBook Air buyers while targeting different audiences than the usual. The Sliding PC was a joint project with Microsoft to help Windows 7 get a deeper presence in tablets.

    Seriously

Just keep copying all those Apple Design Cues Samsung, if you can't beat 'em, confuse 'em.

I also "plan" to ship more notebooks than Apple...

... and I'm betting that won't happen either.

    Don't Forget ...

... Windows machines need to be replaced far more often than Mac OS systems too, so Samsung's got a built-in customer base that thinks "maybe a Samsung will work better than my current brand X pc" to draw from. Apple can only draw customers from committed switchers and those who don't need to replace their existing Apple systems nearly as frequently. So to be besting Samsung is a remarkable feat indeed.

    confusion

... and next year all the talk will be about categorisation and whether that slider in the picture counts as a "notebook" a "tablet" or both. I'm thinking Samsung will count it as both or as whatever is convenient.

    a numbers game?

Please explain to me what a pure numbers game means anyway. If Samsung releases 100 different notebooks and "beats" Apple's total numbers, what good is it? Its the Android strategy to winning... put out raw numbers regardless of profit?

Let Apple continue on its own game, let Samsung copy and paste its way to whatever "top" its shooting for... chances are they still won't "beat" anybody.

P.S. anyone wonder why Samsung's stuff often looks like a complete rip-off of Apple? It almost seems blatant at times. The Korean Apple knock-off company?

    So what if it happens?

"Both companies were nearly tied through the first nine months of 2010 and saw Apple move just 150,000 more systems, according to Digitimes' IDC numbers, or enough that Samsung was within striking distance."

Sure the numbers of units shipped are close, but I'd be more interested in seeing the dollar amount totals for all notebooks shipped by both companies.

Even if Samsung "wins" the competition, it'll be about as meaningful as Honda selling more cars than Mercedes this year.

    I'm in the market

for a good core i7 quad computer. If Samsung's is a thousand dollars less than Apple's I'd be crazy not to take a good look at it, even though it would mean giving up a couple of Mac-only programs I use every day.

I didn't even know Samsung made notebooks. Not that it will change my mind, as I don't buy products with Windows 7 on them, period.
