Nikon working on DSLR with built-in projector

Nikon is following up its point-and-shoot Coolpix S1100pj that sported a built-in projector with a similar concept applied to a full-sized DSLR camera, according to a patent filing in Japan. The Japanese translation claims the projector is built into the electronic viewfinder, but the technical drawings seem to show the projected image coming from the lens itself. Depending on the mode the camera is in, looking through the viewfinder will either show the image or project it onto an exterior screen.

As a patent, the technology won't necessarily translate to a finished product. Nikon regularly files for patents on technology it has used, including lens designs, and so may at least consider the projector feature an option.

In the S1100pj, the pico projector had 14 lumens of brightness and could create images up to 47 inches in size from over seven feet away. [via NikonRumors]
