Sprint WiMAX gets world data roaming plan

Sprint today claimed a symbolic first by being the first US carrier with a 4G roaming deal. Those traveling to Jamaica or Taiwan will have the option of getting online through the WiMAX networks on Digicel and Global Mobile respectively. Unlike typical usage-based roaming plans, access will be genuinely unlimited and will give users a $15 day pass that supplies unlimited data.

The service doesn't cover voice and is mostly intended for modems and routers. Any 4G phone, such as the Evo 4G, can turn off all but 4G and still get data and VoIP calling while away.

More carriers are expected to come onboard in the future, although Sprint didn't give a timeline. WiMAX has a relatively large presence in southeast Asia and also shows in Eastern Europe and Russia.
