Boxee Netflix update delayed again
Boxee delayed its Netflix update for its hardware a second time today over technical issues. The streaming movie service was already running on the app and the Boxee Box but hadn't yet met Netflix's "security requirements" for copy protection, the company's Andrew Kippen said. He didn't have definitive scheduling for the launch other than "soon."
The company has struggled to get major movie content in the Boxee Box and has mostly been limited to formatting web video. TV and sports content has been readily accessible from providers like CBS and the NHL, but full-length movies have mostly been confined to independents where rivals like the Apple TV and Xbox 360 have had mainstream titles. It has had some success in recent months and recently landed Vudu service for major movie purchases and rentals, the 2.0 update for which arrived just last month.
Any changes propagated on the Boxee Box almost always translate to updates on the Mac and Windows versions when they don't appear there first. Netflix and Vudu have been on the desktop app since the end of 2008.
