Gogo, seven airlines give free in-flight Facebook

Seven major airlines have teamed up with Gogo Inflight Internet to provide free access to Facebook during flights. Accessing other pages on the web, however, requires payment, ranging between $5 for short flights or $13 for long ones. Facebook is the most popular place visited on the Gogo network and is being used as a promo to drive adoption of in-air Internet use.

The offer will be included on North American flights from Virgin America, United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, AirTran, US Airways and Alaska Airlines. Gogo supplies its in-flight Wi-Fi network on 1,100 commercial aircraft and 5,000 private ones.

Over the holiday season, Google teamed with Virgin, Delta and AirTran to provide free Wi-Fi during flights in the hopes of getting travelers hooked on the service. [via USAToday]

meanwhile, net neutrality bleeds to death

Can't wait to be individually billed for separate websites when I'm on the ground, too.

    Free Facebook

Will likely do more to stop terrorism and unruly passenger behaviour than everything the TSA has accomplished *to date.*

    Re: meanwhile

And how, exactly, does this affect net neutrality one iota? It's an f'ing promotion. And in the skies, there's no such thing as net neutrality. They have the right to limit your internet anyway they want (or cut it off if it so behooves them).

    geographic limitations

I'd take whatever I could get if someone would hurry up and put a satellite over the damned Pacific. Continental US only FTL.

    So what?

I'll suggest that anyone needing to access Facebook while on a flight is as shallow and self-centered as Zuckerberg himself.
