Roku releases USB Media Player app

Roku on its forum announced it has released support software for the playback of local files connected via USB ports. Appropriately called Roku USB Media Player, the software is compatible with the discontinued HD-XR and current XDS. The update has grown from a public beta and supports MKV, MP4, MOV (all restricted to H.264) and WMV/ASF video formats along with MP3 and AAC audio files, with JPG and PNG files also supported.

Before taking advantage of this feature, users need to have firmware 2.9 build 1529 loaded onto their compatible Roku set-top boxes, which was released last week. The USB Media Player is available in the Channel Store under the New category. [via ZatzNotFunny]
