Latest iOS 4.3 beta hints at 3MP camera, three models

updated 10:00 am EST, Thu February 3, 2011

DisplayPort compatibility would allow HDMI video

The third iOS 4.3 beta suggests some different specifications for the second-generation iPad than previously hinted, a report observes. Included in the code is said to be a reference to a 3 megapixel camera connected to a device known as the N88. The model number first surfaced, however, in a 2009 rumor connected to the iPhone 3GS, which is equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera.

The data appears to conflict with code from earlier betas, suggesting that the next iPad will have a 1 megapixel rear camera, little better than the 0.7 megapixel hardware on the fourth-generation iPod touch. Prior to that some predictions had the tablet using a 5 megapixel camera, equivalent to the one on the iPhone 4. Because of its size, the second-gen iPad is unlikely to be of much use as a practical still camera.

Other references in the v4.3 beta nevertheless point to support for recording VGA, 720p and iFrame (960x540) video. Future iPad owners may also be able to send screen content to a DisplayPort connection, particularly if early case designs do indeed show space for a mini DisplayPort link. Using an adapter cable would allow iPads to connect directly to an HDMI port.

Three different versions of the tablet are listed as iPad 2,1, iPad 2,2 and iPad 2,3. It's thought that these may be Wi-Fi, 3G GSM/UMTS and 3G CDMA models, particularly as Verizon has promised that it will eventually carry a 3G iPad. The carrier currently only offers Wi-Fi models, requiring that people carry a mobile hotspot to get 3G service.
