Sony PS2 sales still thriving, hit 150 million lifetime

PS2 sales surpass 150 million in 11-year run

The Sony PlayStation 2 gaming console has sold more than 150 million units since its launch in 2000, Sony's recently released quarterly financial results reveal. Despite the PS3 being released as a successor, in 2006, 2.1 million of the older console shipped in Sony's last fiscal quarter. In the fall of last year, it celebrated its 10th anniversary in the US.

Games for the 11-year-old system are still being developed as well. The best-selling console was redesigned in 2004, with a slimmer design (pictured).

The sales of the console throughout 2010 were as strong as sales from the previous year and matched or exceeded sales of the PSP. And when factoring in the fourth quarter of the 2010 fiscal year, Sony expects to sell six million PS2s in 2010, or only two million less than of its PSP and less than half of the more advanced PS3, expected to reach 15 million.
