ASUS readying 'secret weapon' to take on next iPad

ASUS claims surprise to counter iPad 2

ASUS has a "secret weapon" to wield against the next iPad, chairman Jonney Shih hinted in an interview. The four new tablets at CES were just the start and would be accompanied by something else. He wouldn't tell Computerworld if it was a tablet at all and was adamant that it had to wait until the launch.

The executive claimed to know what processor Apple is using in the new model, but he didn't say whether this was going on credible rumors or if he had any inside knowledge from his position as a Taiwan industry leader. Most expect Apple to use a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 chip that would be as good or better than the NVIDIA Tegra 2 in ASUS' tablets, but Shih was convinced he would have the performance edge.

"We very carefully chose our tablet processor, the NVIDIA Tegra 2, and to really compete it will take [Apple] some time. You know, [NVIDIA] is well known for graphics."

He was nonetheless complimentary to Apple and thought it had a "good mix" of services that were both on the computer and the web. Trying to compete would be difficult for anyone that wasn't using Android or Windows. It would also be "different from the Wintel era" with less restrictions and more competition, he explained.

ASUS' drift away from Windows was reflected in its CES lineup, as most of its introductions were focused on ARM-based Android slates and not Intel-based Windows hardware.

    What?

"...and to really compete it will take [Apple] some time."

You mean like the year they've had to work on the iPad 2, while you're busy crafting a worthy competitor to the soon-to-be-replaced-with-a-superior-model iPad 1?

Will Apple's competitors ever learn to skate where the puck is -going to be-?

    "Secret weapon"

This phrase best when spoken using the voice of either Boris or Natasha. Your choice.

    More Shi* from Shih

ASUS doesn't even skate to where the puck used to be. They skate to the storage cabinet because they know they can usually find a puck there. It's not the puck that's in play, but hey - they found a puck!

In case you only read the news from MacNN

Let me fill you in... Asus cranks out a new product about every 9.25 hours. I think they have already put out about 30 netbook models ever since they essentially created the market three years ago. As well as announcing the sweeping new tablets @ CES, it doesn't surprise me that they'll release more products in the near future. Once they have a platform developed, they just don't stop with new products.

They clearly sell products that compete against each other, but they've been selling so damn many of them like hotcakes, it must obviously be working. Plus, the U.S.A. is not their only market.

I am curious to see how the "Transformer" works out, hopefully with Honeycomb. That might be my next device purchase. As for a "secret weapon", well... that's marketing for you.

    Morons

These morons don't seem to get that it's not just the hardware, it's the software and the entire eco system which NO ONE besides Apple has. Until someone can compete with Apple on the software side STFU. Bring out a QUAD core tablet with 14" HDTV capabilities, 8 gigs of ram, 640 gigs of Flash storage and oh yeah, a USB PORT!!! and a SD slot!, and it will still suck somewhat without a good OS and eco-system.

I feel bad about he consumers who get sucked into the c*** thats out there just to save a few bucks but end up paying more in the end.

    Press Release From The Future........

Apple today announced that they have stopped development and production plans for the Gen 2 iPad based on hints from Jonney Shih that ASUS has a "Secret Weapon" designed to take on the highly anticipated second generation iPad. Apple engineers are working 12 hour shifts, around the clock, to counter this threat to the second largest capitalized company in the world.

Long ago Apple proved that UI is the edge

Regardless of processor, a silly UI will lead to an unpleasant user experience; regardless of how fast, it is still unpleasant. How fast would you like to swim through a cesspool? Never. A leisurely swim in a clean pool beats a quick supersonic dip in the cesspool ANY DAY.

    ASUS and Microsoft

Western Family and Western Family. If something is being bought, make something that looks like it and sell it with your name on it.

But western family puts too much syrup in their peaches. ASUS puts too much peach in their products.
