AMD Radeon HD 6450, 6570, 6670 hit mid-range

AMD on Monday held a low-profile launch for three new mid-range Radeon HD desktop video cards destined for computer builders. The Radeon HD 6450, 6570 and 6670 have the same DirectX 11 (OpenGL 4) features and GDDR5 memory support as their larger counterparts but have been trimmed back to reduce the cost and fit in tighter space. The Radeon HD 6670 is the flagship with 480 stream (effects) processors, a 128-bit memory bus, an 800MHz main clock and either 512MB or 1GB of 1GHz GDDR5 memory.

Stepping down to the 6570 keeps the bus speed and processor count but uses a more modest 650MHz core clock and has the option of using more frugal 900MHz DDR3 memory, although it can carry up to 2GB to make up the difference. The 6570 can also fit in a half-width space for very compact computers.

At the beginning level, the 6470 is considered a basic substitute for an integrated graphics chipset and has a 64-bit memory bus, 160 stream processors and a clock speed anywhere between 625MHz and 750MHz for the core as well as up to 800MHz for DDR3 memory or 900MHz for GDDR5. The design while simple is efficient enough that it can be cooled through a passive heatsink instead of a fan.

As the trio is due for release directly through computer makers, a price and a ship date aren't public. AMD hasn't said yet if the range will be available stand-alone, although the 6470 may not have that option given its focus. Customers also haven't been named but could include companies that regularly use AMD on the desktop, such as Apple, Dell and HP. [via TechPowerUp]
