Two Mac minis in a 1U server unit, adds front USB

Sonnet Technologies has produced a solution for users who wish to rack-mount up to two 2010 edition Mac minis (server edition), whimsically called the MacRackRackMac Minimini. The unit manages airflow, and adds a front-panel power switch and USB port for each of the two units for easy operation in a 1U server space.

The rackmount solution also secures the two Minis behind its smart front panel, also providing the DVD slot, IR sensor and power indicator lights. Normal use of the Mini's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi abilities is also available, and the steel construction and "air dam" design creates a one-way path for airflow to keep the machines cool and preventing recirculation of warm air. Because of the shallow mounting depth and top cover padding, the minis are held securely in place -- not only deterring theft, but also allowing the rack case to double as transport housing.

The unit is available for order now and carries an MSRP of $170.

    Mac Mini Hosting

This sounds like a great product! I'm definitely be purchasing a couple and see how they work out.

I'm glad to hear someone did this. The new 2010 form factor helps support it.

You can co-locate a unit like this for $52 per month at www.macminiworld.net. What is better then a mini server? I mini server with a ton of super fast bandwidth!

    Hidden aluminum

I might wish to leave the top flap off. I like seeing the aluminum finish of the mini. I have mine in a rack, now, with no mount.

I have often wondered if keeping the units in a steel rack might diminish the WiFi performance. I would like to put the Airport Extreme right next to it, but I am concerned about the signal.

    WiFi...

WiFi is important why... its going to be hard lined with GB Ethernet. Active wifi and bluetooth is a security risk. I wonder if the rack mount includes a built in switch so you can plug in one Ethernet connection for the 2 mac mini's as some places charge extra per physical connection.
