Sony Ericsson Xperia Play seen headed to Verizon

Xperia Play linked to Verizon at Wirefly

Sony Ericsson may make a rare gesture towards CDMA carriers by supplying the Xperia Play to Verizon. A comparison at third-party phone store Wirefly shows the PlayStation phone listed as coming to Verizon in a comparison with the iPhone. The store doesn't claim to be authoritative but has accurate specs and is known to get advance information.

Very few Sony Ericsson phones have used CDMA, owing in part to the company's international and frequently European focus. The listing could cast doubt on the rumor as a result. However, the phone's role as a PlayStation gaming system may encourage it to reach as many carriers as possible. Verizon has been the largest advocate of Android and could be more likely to give the Xperia Play more attention, even despite its getting the iPhone this week.

The Xperia Play will be the first phone to support PlayStation Suite and will have a dedicated app to manage and load games that support PSP-style controls, including PS1 remakes, PSP conversions and eventually original titles. As an Android 2.3 phone, it will be at the upper mid-range with a second-generation 1GHz Snapdragon, a four-inch LCD and a five-megapixel camera with 720p video. About 8GB of storage should be built-in to hold games and media.

An official unveiling is due this Sunday. Carriers could start getting the phone as soon as March, but whether or not this includes American carriers isn't certain. [via PhoneArena]
