Yahoo Livestand digital newsstand hits tablets
Yahoo during a mobile event on Thursday unpacked Livestand. Billed as a perpetually active newsstand, it initially gives Android tablet and iPad users a customized selection of news from Yahoo, entertainment site OMG and Flickr galleries. The content will be constantly updated based on the user's tastes, the location, and on the time of the day.
Other publishers beyond Yahoo will come onboard in the future, Yahoo said, and will have the option of publishing once but hitting more than one platform at the same time. Ads should also be more targeted but will react to reader behavior rather than scrape personal data.
The Android and iPad versions should both be ready in the first half of the year. Yahoo has hinted that it might create a phone-sized version and, last year, showed an HTML5 prototype of what became Livestand that would let it bring the news outlet to web browsers of any kind.
