Carrier fights to retain key customer base

(Updated with AT&T confirmation) AT&T is giving at least some iPhone subscribers a bonus 1,000 rollover voice minutes, accounts say. The offer is available only through a text notification, to which people must reply "yes" by March 31st. Subscribers who haven't received the initial text may still be able to send "yes" to 11113020, 9to5 heard, and get notice that their account has been credited.

The bonus is believed to be just one of many tactics AT&T is using to deter people from switching to the Verizon iPhone, which officially launched just yesterday. The carrier has also implemented unlimited mobile-to-mobile calls, phone trade-ins and free MicroCell handouts. Last week it issued 20 percent discount coupons for accessories.

Update: An AT&T spokesman has confirmed that the 1,000-minute texts are legitimate.

    4 Weeks

    Four weeks before you get your 1000 minutes. I wonder if they're providing the same deal to all cell phone users. They should.

    Catch?

    I wonder if there is a catch - like you lose your unlimited data plan if you reply....?

    Confirmation of legitimacy?

    Do we have any confirmation that this is legitimately from AT&T? Isn't it possible that this is a scam? I know that scammers have been able to make charges to people's cell phone accounts through text messages. Until I see something official from AT&T, there is no way that I would opt in to this based on an unconfirmed blog post.

    new unlimited mobile-to-mobile

    I haven't tried the bonus rollover minutes yet but did talk to a very nice AT&T person this morning about changing to the unlimited messaging with mobile-to-mobile (M2M) calls. Their FAQ's don't (currently) say how to make this change but I had my Family Plan unlimited messaging service changed to the unlimited message with M2M calls service. There was no increase in cost because my plan was already a 1400 minute plan. The AT&T person also dropped my calling plan to the 700 plan (saving $20/mo) and is having AT&T cap my rollover minutes at their current level so I don't lose them (almost 6000, don't really need the extra rollover minutes). I'll watch my account to see how many calls are actually made to a landline phone, which is all I have to pay for now.

    Great but..

    I have the family roll over plan and currently have over 8000 minutes. I lose about 800 per month.

    With family to family free minutes etc, I just never get to use the regular minutes. However, I would like more text messages. 200 is not quite enough. :-(

    Just a thought,

    who cares

    I don't use the minutes I have now, and my rollover minutes are over 1000. So who needs more minutes? How about offering free data time instead?

    @prl99

    ATT allows you to have up to 10 numbers that you can call (or receive calls from) for free. Add that to the free M2anyM feature and you may not even need 700 minutes/month.
