YouTube gets 3D uploads with LG Optimus 3D first

YouTube in a last-minute unveiling with LG said it would start taking mobile video uploads in 3D. The move will let people share 3D videos for the first time in earnest. LG's Optimus 3D will be the first to have the option and, because of the glasses-free display, can display much of the content it records.

Google, YouTube's parent, hasn't detailed accessibility, though the stereoscopic 3D should mean that any device with stereoscopic 3D, such as a computer with a 120Hz display or a 3D-aware TV, should support the extra depth.

The addition could be a minor milestone in 3D adoption as it would enable amateur 3D video to be quickly spread and shared. Most homemade 3D video is limited to high-end camcorders or hybrid cameras like the Fujifilm Real 3D W3 and often can't be played by anything other than a proprietary video app. YouTube would give 3D a more common platform and would skip the need for custom file formats and apps.
