Google Docs adds support for Pages, Photoshop, AutoCAD

updated 05:20 pm EST, Fri February 18, 2011

Pages among 11 other formats

Google on Friday gave Google Docs its first real file format update with 12 new standards. The release supports an Apple-specific format for the first time and will let users read Pages documents in-browser. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop images also now work, and modelling gets its first support through recognition of Autodesk's AutoCAD.

Other updates bring Excel support, including XLSX files. Google will now see XML Paper Specification files and can recognize more narrowly focused formats such as SVG images or PostScript and TrueType fonts.

The move should apply to every area where Google Docs works, including mobile. Other Google web apps can also now recognize the content themselves. Gmail now knows to see the formats and open them up either in a basic viewer or to make them editable directly within Docs if it has a direct equivalent.
