HP phases out Envy 13 after brief shot at MacBook Air

HP drops Envy 13 in favor of Envy 14

HP said late Friday that it had phased out the Envy 13. The ultraportable notebook has now been officially discontinued following its recent price slash. It phased out as the Envy 14 "basically replaced" the design, CNET was told.

The Envy line was rolled out in September 2009 to use the experience of the Voodoo PC design team to improve its notebooks and compete against Apple's upscale design aesthetic. Its Envy 13 design was targeted primarily against the MacBook Air. Although it was significantly heavier than its Apple counterpart at 3.7 pounds, it used the same low-voltage Core 2 Duo S chips and successfully fit dedicated graphics into a chassis only slightly thicker than in the Air.

HP never said how well the Envy 13 fared, but it faced stiff competition from an Apple that could successfully outpace it on features and price. The Envy 13 originally cost $100 more than the then-current Air and only dipped to $999 after the new MacBook Air created added pressure. Apple also successfully wielded a switch to all-SSD storage where the Envy 13 at best had it as a premium option.

The discontinuation is the second in as many weeks of a notebook that was consciously aimed at the Air. Dell dropped the last Adamo last week, again after having difficulty competing on price.

    Ironical

PC's are having a tough time hitting Apple's price point?

Now maybe people will realize that feature-matching Macs and PCs is a negligible difference?

(It has been for some time now...)
