Spring Design Alex on exit

Spring Design on Monday told prospective buyers of the Alex e-reader late Monday that the device was at an end. It explained that it was "phasing out" the dual-screen Android slate sometime within the next six months. The replacement hadn't been unveiled yet, it told eBook Reader.

It's not clear when the company began the phaseout, but the company currently lists both black and white versions as "out of stock." The Alex started selling in April for $399 and was first discounted to $349 in November.

A sequel to the Alex is probable if the company remains solvent, but what it would entail hasn't been mentioned. Spring Design is still embroiled in a lawsuit against Barnes & Noble for allegedly copying the dual-screen reader idea during planning that eventually led to the Nook.
