Roku boxes add Rdio music channel

Roku landed an important extension of its media channels on Thursday through a deal with Rdio. The music service gives users unlimited access to songs on-demand, including in playlists. Rdio centers on its social side and can show what's popular both on the service as a whole as well as with friends and through recommendations.

Regular controls work from a Roku Internet Player's remote, although a complex queue of multiple albums, songs or playlists needs a web browser on a separate device.

The channel addition is being pushed out immediately and is free for existing Roku owners. Rdio itself can be tested in a one-week trial and costs $10 per month for unlimited access both on the Roku hardware and any other device that supports the service.
